Collaborative Painting UK
Collaborative Painting UK was formed in 2016 by Luke Palmer to continue the work of Tunisian artist Hechmi Ghachem and American artist David Black, through the promotion and practice of Tunisian Collaborative Painting.
Tunisian Collaborative Painting is an art form developed in Tunisia in the mid-1980s. It is unique in its method of allowing a group of artists to work simultaneously on a canvas without discussion or planning beforehand. The result is a painting created by a group of individuals that looks like the work of a single artist.
It is with great sadness that I share the news of the passing of my friend, mentor and partner in Tunisian Collaborative Painting;
David Black.
It’s hard to put into words just how much this man impacted my life and how close we became, despite a gap of 3000+ miles, lack of funds, ill health and a pandemic ensuring our real life collaborations never being realised. Something I will always regret.
David’s life story is incredible/boarder-line unbelievable. A Tony Award winning Broadway producer, actor, violinist, opera singer, CIA agent, and author. Oh and of course an internationally acclaimed artist.
He wrote a book about it called ‘Falling off Broadway’ that i highly recommend. His autobiography concludes before our paths crossed but I do know that had there been time, there would have been an additional final chapter within which our story would be told… so I guess that’s down to me now.
And I will tell it, soon. Or more accurately, David and I will.
Goodbye David, from the bottom of my heart I thank you for your friendship, guidance and encouragement. You told me I was the ‘real-deal’ and blessed me as the custodian of Tunisian Collaborative Painting, just as Hechmi Ghanchem did to you before he passed away. It’s an honour I cherish. You were of course right, Tunisian Collaborative Painting does have the power to chance the world, one group of artists at a time.
Your friend
Luke

Today a bench transformation is starting! Artist Luke Palmer @collaborativepaintinguk is holding a drop in session with @uhbwNHS staff to design and customise an eye-catching picnic bench that will be placed in the grounds of Weston General Hospital in time for Weston Arts + Health Week with @CultureWeston
More benches from @somersetwoodrecycling are being transformed by #WestonSuperMare community groups including Bournville Primary Summer Holiday Club and Coronation Estate Community Hub working with artists @mollymural @CaiBurton & @helen.wheelock
We’re delighted to be creating bespoke benches for hospital staff, patients and visitors to enjoy a sit down and breath of fresh air.

Brilliant session with the awesome staff of @gdssummits inspiring better mental@health and well-being through art and creativity at the Apple in Bristol. What a great group to work with and get me back into facilitating team building events after 18 months… ๐๐ผ

Working on a very exciting project that I’ve been dreaming up for a while... time to bring together a years worth of Lockdown Collaborations ๐๐ผ
#A4FOR5 Group 6 - complete!!
What an amazing group this was... such a diverse set of artworks! Loving each and every one of these for a wide range of reasons... but just having connected with new artists and to hear their stories of being inspired/rejuvenated/excited again by taking part in this project is perhaps the most rewarding outcome.
Group 5 were:
@janinepartington
@freelybea
@ruthonaroof
@willmartini_illus
@zoebillboardgibbons
๐๐ผ
Lockdown 3 is on track to be lifted by the end of this month... which really only gives this project a potential 4 more weeks under its current guise.
I’m looking for a bunch of new artists to take part over the next 4 weeks - the process is simple:
- You have 1 week to create 5 new A4 artworks in any medium you like
- After one week we exchange addresses with 5 other artists and send out your 5 works to them.
- The other 5 artists do the same and we all sit back and await the postman’s visit to deliver us all 5 new artworks!
Leave a message here or DM to take part!
What my friend and fellow artist @xenzogram is creating with new digital technology is taking the work that graffiti and street artists make to the next level and into new spaces. What always inspires me about his work is that he never leaves it there and is always looking for where to take it next.
You must experience #XenzVR for yourselves to even begin to understand where this art form is going... it is incredible and yet somehow I feel is only just scratching the surface of what is possible when we really begin to connect the dots between our work as artists and creators and virtual worlds. By displaying his new work via reflate Twitch streams, he is already embracing the ways that these new platforms can support each other, help to showcase our creative outputs and draw in new audiences.
I’m always delighted to collaborate with @xenzogram and always will. Today I provide the soundtrack to his walk through of XenxVR and I invite you all to come and experience it for yourselves at 3pm this afternoon. Expect dreamy drum and bass and visuals that will transport you to a whole new world of art.
We bring you The Future.
